Concrete Benchtops & Countertops
Concrete benchtops in Melbourne, hand-cast for kitchens, outdoor BBQ benchtops and architectural fit-outs. Cast full-depth in our Mordialloc studio from a silica-free composition that's roughly four times the strength of standard concrete. Made to order, four to six weeks, delivered nationally.
As seen on
A pink concrete kitchen island for Love It or List It Australia.
When Episode 5 of Season 6 called for a pink kitchen island in a country home, Neale Whitaker brought the brief to us. We cast an 80mm full-depth concrete benchtop and matching waterfall edges in our Mid Red 0.25 pigment, set into Dulux 'Petite Pink Half' joinery designed by Gardner Design and manufactured by Seaview Cabinets.
The colour split the comments. Half hated it. Half loved it. Concrete in pigmented form does that, which is why we like working with it.
"SnapCo has refined this material to be four times stronger than traditional concrete, engineered for durability that rivals stone, yet expressive enough to elevate the character of a home."
"Pink bench tops are not for the faint-hearted, but when the homeowner has her heart set on one, it's the job of Team Love It to deliver the right pink."
Project: Research, Victoria. Design: Gardner Design. Build: Howse Constructions. Aired October 2025 on Foxtel, Binge and Prime Video.

01 / Use
Outdoor Concrete Benchtops
Outdoor concrete benchtops are cast in the same studio composition as our indoor benchtops: silica-free, UV-stable pigments, freeze-thaw-stable, satin food-safe sealer that resists red wine for six hours. Suited to BBQ stations, outdoor kitchens, alfresco bars, and pool-side counters. We recommend a covered position for finish longevity; the slab itself is built for full exposure.
One composition, indoor or outdoor. We build to outdoor spec as the baseline, then the same slab goes into a kitchen, a BBQ station or a pool-side bar without changing the recipe. UV-stable pigments resist fade. The freeze-thaw-stable composition handles Australian winters from Hobart up. We recommend a covered position for finish longevity, but the slab itself is built for exposure.
02 / Finish
Polished Concrete Benchtops
Polish level is selected at quote: satin (medium sheen) or honed (matt). Both bring out the pigment and the slight cloud of cure that comes from a hand-poured slab.
Which one to pick? Satin reads warmer under kitchen pendants and shows the colour more openly. Honed reads cooler and quieter, and it hides daily handprints better. For a darker pigment, charcoal or lichen green or deep red, we'd recommend satin. The polish lifts the depth of colour the pigment is doing. For lighter neutrals where the goal is restraint, honed sits more naturally next to oak or pale stone.
Both finishes are sealed the same way: a satin food-safe sealer that resists red wine for six hours. Both wear the same way. Refinishing is possible later but rarely needed, since the studio polish holds up under ordinary household use for years.
See it on the Richmond agency fit-out above, where a satin-polished concrete island sits against brass tapware and a timber slat base.
03 / Palette
Concrete with timber. Warmth and weight, together.
Concrete benchtops pair naturally with oak or ash cabinetry, accent lighting, and brass tapware. The cast cloud picks up the warmth of timber grain; the satin polish lifts pigment depth without competing with wood tone. Most of our recent commissions sit in this palette: pale or charcoal concrete tops, timber cabinetry, light pooling across the surface.
Concrete carries weight. Timber softens it. Pair the two and a kitchen reads confident without feeling cold. Most of our recent commissions sit in this palette: oak or ash cabinetry, satin concrete tops, accent lighting that pools across the surface. The texture of the concrete picks up the warmth of the timber, and the slight variation in the cast cloud reads as material honesty next to grain.
04 / Design notes
Designing a concrete kitchen island.
Site your cooktop and sink in the perimeter run (Caesarstone, granite, or stainless steel) and keep the concrete for the island top. Citrus, vinegar, and wine etch sealed concrete over years; integrated basins pool water at the seal line. The island handles breakfast bench, prep boards, served-from surface, and family gathering without trouble.
The longest-lived concrete benchtops we've installed are the ones that stay out of the wet zone. We tell every client the same thing: site your cooktop and sink in the perimeter run (Caesarstone, granite, or stainless steel) and keep the concrete for the island top. The island is where concrete shows best, and where the chemistry of food prep doesn't slowly eat at the seal.
Why? Citrus, vinegar and wine etch sealed concrete with daily contact over years. Built-in sinks pool water at the seal line. Integrated cooktops splatter oil at frequency. Hot pots are fine. Heavy chopping is fine. The slow, repeated chemistry of food prep is the long-term enemy of any sealed surface, and concrete is no exception.
What island concrete is best at: served-from surface, breakfast bench, prep-board station, family gathering point. What it tolerates with care: drink prep with a board down, occasional spills wiped within the hour. What it doesn't love: integrated basins, built-in cooktops, and 24/7 unsealed acid exposure.
We've cast islands in pigments ranging from charcoal through to lichen green, salmon and pink, with white concrete benchtops as a focused range of their own. The pigment is mixed through the full depth of the slab, not painted onto a surface, so chips and edge wear keep the same colour as the top face.
05 / Beyond the kitchen
Bar tops, reception desks, media units.
Beyond the kitchen we cast hospitality bar tops, architect-studio reception desks, boardroom and conference tops, console runs, built-in window-seat ledges, and media-unit benchtops. Same studio composition, same full-depth pigment, same satin food-safe sealer. Templated to the cabinetry; sealed against everyday spills. Keep concrete out of the wet zone and the slab outlives the room.
The same logic applies anywhere else in a home or fit-out: keep concrete out of the wet zone and the slab outlives the room around it. We've cast hospitality bar tops, architect-studio reception desks, boardroom and conference tops, console and credenza runs, built-in window-seat ledges, and media-unit benchtops set into living-room joinery. Every piece comes out of our Mordialloc studio templated to the cabinetry, with full-depth pigment through the slab and sealed against everyday spills. Concrete loves the dry zone, and it always has.

Material / The composition
Silica-free, full-depth, cast in one pour.
Every benchtop is cast from a composition we developed in-house: silica-free, roughly four times the compressive strength of standard concrete, full-depth (never veneered onto a substrate).
The studio seal is food-safe, in a honed or satin finish. Pigment is selected at quote.

Common Questions
Concrete benchtops, the things people ask.
-
Is it called a concrete benchtop or a concrete countertop? +
Both. Australians say benchtop; the US term is countertop. They mean the same thing: a hand-cast concrete kitchen surface, whether it's a perimeter run, an island top, or a freestanding bar. We use both terms because we work with clients across both vocabularies.
-
How thick are SnapCo concrete benchtops? +
The slab itself is 20 mm cast throughout. The visible front edge, called the apron, is built down to whatever depth suits the design. A 60 mm apron reads contemporary and clean. A 100 mm apron reads heavy and architectural. Waterfall edges and freestanding islands are sized to the brief. The 20 mm slab keeps weight down and lets us span longer runs without the cabinetry load problems a full-thickness top brings.
-
Should I put my cooktop or sink in a concrete kitchen island? +
We recommend against it. The longest-lived concrete benchtops are the ones that stay out of the wet zone. Site the cooktop and sink in the perimeter run (Caesarstone, granite, stainless) and keep the concrete for the island top. Daily acid contact from citrus, vinegar and wine etches sealed concrete over years; integrated basins pool water at the seal line. Hot pots, prep boards and breakfast use are no issue.
-
Can concrete benchtops be used outdoors? +
Yes. We use the same composition indoor and outdoor: freeze-thaw-stable, UV-stable pigments, satin food-safe sealer that resists red wine for six hours. Suited to BBQ stations, outdoor kitchens, and pool-side bars.
-
Do concrete benchtops stain or crack? +
The satin food-safe sealer resists red wine for six hours. Hairline crazing is part of cast concrete's character; structural cracking is not, and is covered under your Australian Consumer Law guarantees against manufacturing fault. We recommend a cutting board (you would for any benchtop) and a coaster under hot pots.
-
Can concrete benchtops be installed over existing cabinetry? +
Yes, provided the cabinetry can carry the load. Our 20 mm cast slab with a built-up apron is meaningfully lighter than a full-depth concrete top, which makes it suitable for most standard kitchen cabinetry. We supply exact load specs at quote stage and your kitchen joiner or builder confirms the sub-structure before templating.
-
What's the lead time on a kitchen benchtop? +
Four to six weeks from quote acceptance and final joinery measurement. Templating happens once your cabinetry is installed; cast begins after templating; delivery and install happen at the end of the cure schedule.
-
Do you deliver and install Australia-wide? +
Yes. Melbourne metro is included in the studio quote. Regional Victoria, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are quoted per piece. See the national-delivery section on our custom-built kitchen benchtops page.
